Golden Gate Park: Peace in the Mist

The sublime beauty of Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park is an oasis in the midst of bustling city life and one of San Francisco's treasured naturescapes.  The 12 acre man-made lake surrounds Strawberry Hill Island, which is named for the wild strawberries once grown there.  This still watered lake and the rich wooded area it encompasses reflects a quiet, serene side of the city that is often overlooked in travel guides.

The Stone Bridge traversing Stow Lake has a romantic quality, with its old-world cobblestones and classic Roman style.  This is a beautiful sight to behold as the fog rolls in and gently covers the bridge with a blanket of mist.  Below, the path onto and across the bridge beckons as I wander with camera in hand...

The aged trees and enchanting wooded landscape around the lake are rustic and wild.  Alive with every imaginable texture of wilderness, these trees look like cracks in a whitewashed sky.  It is so peaceful here...

Winter Mini Paintings

These little winter paintings created in cool greens and greys reflect the spirit of brisk January days.  Even in the coldest part of the year nature still proves to be an inspiration.  Lately, on my morning walks I encounter little birds in the barren trees building their nests for the spring to come.  They appear to be so busy fluttering from branch to branch...

Over the last few months I have been experimenting with acrylic on canvas and these mini paintings are examples of my work.  The tree image is accented with metallic gold and the little bird with silver. These are only 4"x4" and can be hung or displayed on a flat surface.

Welcoming the New...

Happy 2012 everyone!  I hope you are all enjoying a little downtime now that the holidays have passed.  I just finished "undecorating" from all the December festivities and am finally able to sit back and enjoy a cup of tea.

Freshly cut flowers are one of my favorite traditions to greet the beginning of a new year and these white freesia blossoms caught my eye at the market yesterday.  January, for me, is about simplicity, learning to do away with the old and welcoming the new.  Flowers in bloom signify new life, so a vase of beautiful and fragrant freesia is one way of celebrating the arrival of 2012 and all the new beginnings it will bring...
