Dinner in the Garden: A Colorful Outdoor Table

Monday, July 2, 2012

Summer entertaining outdoors is one of the joys of the season.  We are lucky to be having mild weather this year with sunny afternoons leading to cool and crisp evenings.  Perfect for an early dinner in the garden with friends...

While entertaining outdoors, I try to keep the table fairly simple so guests can focus on the garden environment.  When planning a casual dinner with an exotic flair, bright colors look lively when fused with various greens reflecting the surrounding plants.   Here, natural woven placemats are layered with green dinnerware, colorful painted accent plates, and tinted wineglasses. A cloth napkin pulled through a napkin ring or tied with a colorful ribbon is a simple flourish to make the table seem special.

Outdoor dining requires more planning for comfort than staying inside, but the fresh air and natural setting make it all worthwhile. An umbrella over the table or patio cover is most comfortable for guests if the sun is still out when dinner begins.  Pillows on the chairs make them feel less formal and more cozy.   Potted dahlias pick up the orange color in the accent plates and bring a bit of the garden to the table.

To create your own version of this table, choose a colorful accent plate to mix with solid dinnerware, neutral placemats and napkins.  Emphasize the colors in your accent plates with potted plants!

Of course having delicious food is just as important as styling a decorative table.  Since the peacock plates and bright flowers give a fresh summery look, I'm planning a menu to match.

Epicurious is a wonderful source for recipes and I often use this site when selecting a menu.  Here are a few links to create a fresh summer feast in your own backyard.  Enjoy!
