Blush Roses on Bordeaux

Tuesday, September 3, 2013

It is beginning to feel like fall!  I've been busy in the studio and influenced by the colors of the season.  This latest painting is of blush carpet roses from our yard.  The way the petals appear raggedy and tend to topple over one another makes them interesting subjects to portray.  They are robust and grow in clusters, contrasting the more traditional rose which appears on long stems.  I like them because they have a certain rusticity that is unusual in this flower.

The deep burgundy and bordeaux tones that are currently in fall fashion and interior decor are some of my favorites.  These opulent wine tones inspired this piece, as I was interested in depicting the subtlety of the blush against a rich, tapestry-like background.

This 8" x 10" painting of watercolor and acrylic includes decorative papers, metallic threads, beads, and doilies.

Happy September!
