Duarte Poinsettia Farm

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

A holiday trip to Duarte Nursery's Poinsettia Farm in Hughson, California is a treasured tradition for many locals and visitors alike.  The large greenhouse features a spectacular display of over 60,000 poinsettias in more than thirty varieties.  Last weekend, my husband and I had the pleasure of going there and we brought home a carload of these lovely Christmas flowers!

Duarte  Poinsettia Greenhouse

The experience of visiting Duarte's Poinsettia Farm is as inspiring as the beautiful poinsettias grown there.  The vast number of plants is breathtaking and one can pick and choose from the many colored poinsettias displayed on tables throughout the greenhouse.

In addition to the stunning colors offered, the poinsettias themselves are of extremely high quality.  Each individual potted plant is watered by a drip system that provides the perfect amount of water in an area bathed in natural light.  These conditions create strong plants that stay healthy longer if cared for properly.

Duarte Prestige Red Poinsettias

Classic and beautiful, the Prestige Red poinsettias are abundant throughout the greenhouse, but other less well-known varieties also catch the eye.

White Duarte Poinsettias

These lovely taller white poinsettias are a favorite of mine, as are the many different pink and variegated ones.

Premier Pink Duarte Poinsettias

The Premier Pink variety shown above is a unique mauve tone and stood out with its dramatic display of non-traditional color.

Transporting Poinsettias

Tiered wagons bring new plants from backstock into the sales area.

One of the most elegant and memorable varieties is the lovely icy pink Visions of Grandeur poinsettia.  This plant is available in a larger size potted in a white basket for a beautiful winter display.

Visions of Grandeur Poinsettia

Needless to say, we had a fantastic time poinsettia shopping and our home is now filled with many of these exquisite winter plants.  They arrived safely at our house wrapped in craft paper sleeves without so much as a broken branch.  Soon I will be photographing them for a new collection of floral imagery celebrating this stunning holiday flower...

  1. I would love to visit this poinsettia farm. What a fun tradition.

    1. Hi Tammy,

It is fun, and definitely something we'd like to do again next year. Thanks so much for stopping by!

  2. So beautiful! Your photographs make these pointsettias even more gorgeous, thanks so much for sharing them.

    1. Thank you! I am happy I could share the fun of this experience and that you enjoyed the photos.

  3. What lovely photos! And oh-my-gosh what a treasure trove of Poinsettias you have there! I think my husband would have to pry my hands off the doors to get me to leave! I can see why you'd want to make this a tradition.

We had a poinsettia grower by me when we used to live in NJ, and they would train their poinsettias into topiary trees. What a sight! Does this farm do that as well?

And you take such beautiful photographs as always!

    1. Kelly,

I didn't notice any poinsettia topiaries there but they did have some gorgeous poinsettia trees. They were not as structured as a topiary but were oversized and quite lovely. I think they came in red and white.

Thanks for the kind words about my photographs!
